Please consider serving as a Peer Mentor at the APA 2019 Convention in Chicago! The Society for Child and Family Policy and Practice (Division 37), in collaboration with other APA Divisions, Committees, and Offices, would like to invite you to volunteer to mentor an international student Convention mentee.
Who Can Participate? The program is open to both graduate students and early career psychologists (within ten years of their doctoral degree) who live in the United States, who will be attending the APA 2019 Convention and who have at least one year of prior APA Convention experience.
What is Involved? You will be paired as mentors with an international psychology student attending APA Convention as first-author presenter. Your mentoring expertise is in navigating Convention and in being hospitable. You will be required to (1) have e-mail contact with your mentee prior to Convention (helping them plan to make the most of their experiences), (2) meet at least once individually with your mentee during the Convention and (3) attend a one-hour orientation for international student mentees and mentors at Convention. You will also have the opportunity to attend and be recognized at the international reception, sponsored by the APA Office of International Affairs and the Committee on International Relations in Psychology. You and your mentee are encouraged to make any additional plans to connect at Convention.
Program Goals: For Mentors (U.S. students and ECPs): To gain a broader understanding of psychology outside the United States, to learn about psychology experiences in another country, and to have an opportunity for in-depth discussion, laying the groundwork for continued exchange or collaboration. For Mentees (international students): To have a guide and introduction to the APA Convention, to learn ways to get the best out of Convention, and to increase interest in psychological research, training, and practice collaboration across borders. For participating Divisions: To provide opportunities for your members to make international contacts; promote collaboration and exchange.
