Montefiore Medical Center’s Pediatric Behavioral Health Integration Program (BHIP) is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Psychology Fellowship in Integrated Primary Care for the 2021-2022 training year, with a start date no later than September 2021. Pediatric BHIP is affiliated with the Division of Academic General Pediatrics within the Department of Pediatrics at Montefiore.

This position is open to graduates from American Psychological Association-accredited doctoral programs in clinical, counseling, or school psychology, who will have completed their internship and all degree requirements by the start of fellowship. This fellowship will be one year in duration, with an option for a second year. Postdoctoral fellows will work as part of an interdisciplinary team alongside an incredible staff of pediatricians, pediatric residents, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and health educators in our integrated behavioral health program in the Bronx and lower Westchester County. Fellows will provide clinical services in our primary care clinics three days per week, with an additional two days focused on training and research activities. Research, evaluation, and quality improvement projects will involve supporting existing BHIP writing and dissemination efforts. There will also be opportunities for training of master’s level psychology students and psychology externs, as well as medical students and residents. Fellows are encouraged to participate in our Staff Emotional Support (SES) team to respond to incidents of work-related trauma and stress, promoting the wellness of Montefiore Medical Center staff and associates.

The Pediatric BHIP fellowship focuses on providing direct care and training within Montefiore’s network of 20 primary care practices in the Bronx and lower Westchester County. Montefiore serves pediatric patients from ethnic minority, economically disadvantaged, and linguistically diverse families. The objective of the Pediatric BHIP fellowship is to prepare newly graduated psychologists to work in the primary care setting, treating children across the pediatric lifespan (infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, and emerging adults) within underserved communities.

Fellows will receive both clinical training and didactics in dyadic infant-parent interventions, parent behavior management techniques, and cognitive behavioral therapy for youth with depression, anxiety, ADHD/disruptive behaviors, and trauma. Fellows will be trained to conduct warm handoffs using motivational interviewing, short problem-focused assessment, and brief intervention. Fellows also will receive training in treatment related to health psychology such as needle fear/phobia, enuresis, and sleep difficulties.

Pediatric BHIP at Montefiore is composed of two distinct components, HealthySteps and Child and Adolescent Psychology and Psychiatry (CAPP), which provide evidence-based short-term behavioral health services throughout the pediatric lifespan. HealthySteps is a mental health promotion program that provides developmental and behavioral support and guidance to families with children aged 0-5 years, through an attachment- and trauma-informed lens. CAPP targets school-aged and adolescent youth with mild to moderate depression, anxiety, ADHD/disruptive behaviors, and trauma. BHIP psychologists coordinate care with primary care providers by offering developmental and behavioral health services and ensuring shared treatment plans and goals within the electronic medical record system.

As a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of BHIP’s current clinical work is completed via telehealth. As the situation changes, behavioral health services will likely become a blend of both in-office and telehealth services.

Fellows have access to a wealth of educational opportunities as part of Montefiore, a major teaching hospital in the Bronx, including psychiatry grand rounds and shared training experiences with their adult-focused counterparts in the Department of Family & Social Medicine.
