Research on Psychotherapy Effectiveness with Children and Adolescents

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship under the direction of Sarah Kate Bearman, Ph.D. in the Laboratory for Leveraging Evidence and Advancing Practice for Youth Mental Health (LEAP Lab) at UT Austin. This is a research position, with primary responsibilities that include:

  • Leadership in a randomized clinical trial testing a principle-guided psychotherapy [the FIRST program, Weisz & Bearman 2020] with children and adolescents. The intervention addresses anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, post- traumatic stress, and conduct-related problems and
  • Training and providing consultation to community
  • Manuscript and grant

Strong applicants will have:

  • A Ph.D. in Clinical, Counseling, or School Psychology from an APA-accredited program, completed prior to the start date
  • Experience and demonstrated effectiveness in youth treatment-related
  • Clinical training and experience in CBT for youth depression, anxiety, OCD and post-traumatic stress, and in behavioral parent training for youth conduct
  • Experience and skill in giving professional
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication
  • Publications related to youth mental health care Other highly desirable skills include:
  • Experience working with community partners in research
  • Experience in supervising, consulting, or training clinicians in evidence-based
  • Experience providing and/or teaching modular youth
  • Strong computer, statistical, and technical

Activities will include directing an NIMH-funded randomized clinical trial of the FIRST treatment protocol (Weisz & Bearman, 2020), training and providing consultation to community clinicians who are research participants, oversight of online clinician feedback systems and clinician competency assessment, and database management. Manuscript preparation and grant-writing will be encouraged and supported, consistent with the individual’s research interests. The work involves multi-site collaboration with Harvard University (PI John Weisz) and UT Austin (PI Sarah Kate Bearman). Data from multiple clinical investigations are available for the postdoctoral fellow’s individual research, including interventions for young children in primary care and public schools, and fidelity data from numerous mental health clinical trials. The stipend and benefits are quite competitive. Initial appointment is for one year with extension based on mutual agreement and availability of funding. Applicants with potential availability for 2+ years are preferred.
