The College of Education at the University of Arizona is searching for an established Associate Professor/Full Professor (Tenure Track) researcher with a focus on prevention science to fill the position of Lester and Roberta Smith Endowed Chair for the prevention of substance abuse and to improve the lives of children. This position could potentially be in any one of the four departments in the College of Education. This position will begin August 2024.

The Smith Chair responsibilities should reflect a comprehensive approach to promoting health equity and reducing disparities by supporting environmental approaches and protective factors to address risk factors such as substance use, juvenile crime and incarceration, poverty, child abuse, discrimination, mental illness, violence, and other key developmental risk factors that affect outcomes for children and adolescents. Emphasis should be on informing practices and policies to strengthen conditions that enable individuals, families, and communities to thrive, including innovative mental health and family/community involvement efforts and approaches to discipline that disrupt the disproportionate suspensions and expulsions for students of color and the school to prison pipeline.

The University of Arizona is a proud Hispanic Serving Institution (HIS) and is located close to the international border with Mexico offering the opportunity for scholarship and intervention development with understudied populations.

The Mission of the Smith Chair is to “bring the findings of research to the school and classroom to improve the lives of children and reduce the risk of substance abuse and violence.”

The search committee will begin reviewing applications on October 19, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance plans; life insurance and disability programs; sick leave and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for the employee and qualified family members; state and optional retirement plans; access to UA recreation and cultural activities; and more!
