Inquiries, applications and nominations are invited for the position of Associate Dean of Research for the College of Education at New Mexico State University. Our location in the US/Mexico borderlands provides unique opportunities for innovative programming as we serve diverse populations from across the border region, the state, and the nation.

The mission of the College of Education is to serve the people of New Mexico through education, research, extension education, and public service with specific emphasis on innovative practices, overcoming barriers to learning, international activities, technology, and literacy for the diverse populations of New Mexico and the borderlands. The College is the most ethnically and racially diverse college at NMSU, and is charged with creating a culturally competent cadre of professionals who will serve the highly diverse population of the region in educational and government institutions, healthcare organizations, and other community settings.

The College of Education includes the departments of Counseling and Educational Psychology, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership and Administration, Human Performance, Dance and Recreation, and Special Education and Communication Disorders, as well as a variety of centers and programs that foster excellence in research and education. Our fully accredited programs include residential as well as distance education and online programs.

Summary: This position reports directly to the Dean and has as primary responsibilities: 1) to help build the research agendas of faculty, professional staff, departments and the college; 2) to assist in securing grant funding and developing grant proposals in a timely manner; 3) to build research collaborations and partnerships within departments and the college and with other colleges, universities, research labs, and other institutions; 4) to coordinate outreach initiatives and partnerships for the college and provide leadership for external activities that involve schools, communities, businesses and agencies.

Pay Level: 14 (commensurate with experience)

Required Qualifications and Skills: Demonstrated strong record of success in research with a focus on multiculturalism and diversity issues, experience providing statistical consultation and research design, teaching research skills, funded research and a recognition as a scholar as demonstrated by quality research over a period of time but no less than 7 years. Demonstrated academic leadership experience with university/college committees, councils, research/academic centers/institutes, or coordinating a major grant and proven success managing budgets. Strong communication skills and the ability to work within the college and with external groups are essential. Coordinating numerous activities and the ability to manage diverse programs is necessary. The ability to develop, plan and implement programs to improve and enhance research opportunities for diverse educational communities and a demonstrated social justice commitment to the multicultural community we serve. 

Preferred Qualifications: Teaching research and statistics courses, experience managing multi-million budgets.

Specific Tasks:

  1. Direct and Coordinate the Research focus of the College of Education:
    • Develop the capacity to support research in the college through access to research tools and assistance with research methodologies.
    • Work with the Faculty Research Advisory Council and the College Council Research Committee to further research activities and support in the college.
    • Coordinate with departments and individual faculty on their research interests and connect them with faculty with similar interests in other colleges and institutions.
    • Represent the research interests of the college through work with the Vice-President for Research’s Office and the Council of Associate Deans for Research (CADRe)
    • Support and publicize research work, grant development and publications of faculty and professional staff in the college through publications, newsletters, websites and information dissemination at national and international conferences.
    • Mentor faculty in the College of Education to improve research productivity.
  1. Assist in Locating Grant Funding and Developing grant proposals:
    • Work with the Director of the Office of Education Research and Budgeting (ERB) to find and disseminate Requests for Proposals (RFPs), develop grant writing groups to address available funding, and assist with grant development.
    • Coordinate the preparation of Research and Public Service Project Requests and Federal Initiatives with departments and faculty and follow up on requests for information from the NMSU legislative staff.
    • Work with the Office of Strategic Initiatives to access grant funding opportunities.
    • Work with the Assistant Dean for Development to find additional sources of foundation funds, including donors, for research and outreach projects.
    • Build relationships with grant-funding agencies such as Department of Education, National Science Foundation, other federal and state agencies and foundations.
  1. Build Research Collaborations and Partnerships:
    • Continue to enhance the assessment and evaluation team that presently exists to assist schools, agencies, districts in the Alliance, as well as serve as resources for university-wide grants.
    • Collaborate with other research deans and offices in Higher Education to develop multi-institutional large grants and partnerships in areas of interest to college.
  1. Coordinate Outreach, Partnership and International Activities for the College:
    • Coordinate outreach initiatives in the college with the Alliance for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, and diverse statewide groups to build strategic initiatives that address university-wide and statewide educational issues.
    • Work with faculty and departments to grow and enhance the international activities in the college.
    • Take the lead in linking the college to business and industry that can assist in putting the college on the cutting edge of technology integration.
  1. Advance Research Pedagogy:
    • Provides leadership and support in statistics and research design.
    • Assist in the development of an undergraduate research center of excellence.
    • Ability to lead faculty in developing interdisciplinary research.
  1. Other Duties as Assigned:
    • Assist in creating a more entrepreneurial environment in the college to support students, faculty, research and academic programs.
    • Assist the dean in oversight of the budget as it relates to research and entrepreneurial activities.
    • Complete other duties as assigned by the Dean.
