-The Department of Teaching, Learning, and Leadership (accredited by CAEP – the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation CAEP) focusing on undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs;
-The Department of Counseling and School Psychology, focusing on school counseling (bilingual), marriage and family therapy, school psychology, and mental health counseling; and
-The Center for Urban Education and the Teacher Resource Center, sponsoring conferences, forums, professional development and occasional publications.
Our community of 100+ full and part time faculty represent an array of dedicated educators and practitioners active in local, regional, and national professional organizations. Our faculty’s extensive professional networks and affiliations with community-based organizations, schools, and educational and clinical leaders help make the School of Education’s programs highly attractive and competitive in the New York metro area and beyond.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
The next Dean will be joining a highly engaged educational community and will help build on the School’s current success. The School of Education at LIU Brooklyn is guided by principles of social justice, inclusion, intellectual rigor, inquiry-based pedagogy, and a strength-based, student-centered approach to preparing students to work with children, adolescents, adults, and families in professional contexts. We value the diversity of our student body which is representative of learners new to the field and those returning and retooling for different or enhanced career experience. Many of our students are native New Yorkers, recent immigrants, and/or the first in their families to attend college, who are interested in serving the communities from which they hail. Others are drawn from across the U.S. and internationally to study within the distinctive mental health and educational context of a thriving urban center.
The Dean’s position in the School of Education at LIU Brooklyn presents an exceptional opportunity for an educational leader to address critical questions in the field of education and to develop innovative educational and socio-emotional intervention programming for students and families across the life span in one of the largest educational and social systems in the country. LIU Brooklyn’s breadth of academic programs and disciplines in the health professions, business, and liberal arts and sciences offers many opportunities and a supportive environment for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative cross-disciplinary programming.
EXPECTATIONS AND QUALIFICATIONS
The next dean will be a visionary leader and educator who can cultivate a stimulating intellectual community while growing the faculty, student body, and programs within the School of Education. He/she will have substantial experience in higher education and/or public education in a thriving and transitioning urban center such as New York City. Candidates will have a proven track record of developing private and public partnerships and common projects with schools and community-based organizations. He/she will also lead the faculty in research responsive to the challenges and opportunities in education locally and across the country. Increasing grant activity and fund raising will also be essential as will active engagement in student recruitment and retention.
Candidates should have the following profile:
-An earned doctorate in education, counselor education, psychology, and/or a related field, required;
-A minimum of 5+ years senior administration experience and partnership development, required;
-An experienced leader and/or educator in K-12 urban settings and/or mental health contexts, required;
-An understanding of professional accreditations across academic programs, preferred;
-A demonstrated track record of scholarly productivity, including successful grant activity, along with curricular innovation, preferred;
-Achievements in fund raising beyond grants, preferred.
