Walter V. Robinson, Editor-At-Large, The Boston Globe
Many individuals in the United States are exposed to trauma at some point in their lives. In fact, conservative estimates indicate that up to 60% of adults have experienced at least one event that would be considered traumatic, such as child maltreatment, interpersonal violence, natural disaster, war or serious accident, in their lifetime. Scientific knowledge on the effects of traumatic stress and ways forward to recovery and resilience need to be disseminated to a wider audience including the public. One way to do this is through investigating reporting. This webinar will focus on the investigative reporting of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team regarding the widespread pattern of child sexual abuse by priests and the Catholic Church’s shielding of offenders and concealment of crime. The team editor and leader reporter for the Globe’s four-personSpotlight team will discuss “light bulb moments” in the investigation as well as the impact of and coping with trauma from hearing survivors’ stories and witnessing severe emotional distress on journalists. The importance of trauma psychologists’ collaboration and communication of scientific findings on trauma with news organizations will be discussed.
