The Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) is seeking nominations for one master’s level member for the Training Advisory Committee (TAC) of its Services for Transition Age Youth (STAY) Fellowship funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The term of service is three years beginning February 2018 with the possibility of serving a second consecutive term.

The STAY Fellowship program’s principle aim is to identify, select, and support the training of master’s level psychology or counseling students who plan to work as behavioral health service providers, helping reduce health disparities among ethnic minorities in the United States. This program guides students in terminal master’s programs in providing leadership for mental health services delivered primarily to transition age youth (ages 16-25) who are racial/ethnic minorities.

The TAC plays a key role in selecting new fellows and advising the MFP office regarding policy and program issues. Committee members make policy and program recommendations, review fellowship and dissertation support applications, review fellows’ progress reports, mentor fellows, and plan, attend, and assist with MFP activities at the APA convention and other conferences. Members also perform other duties as requested by the MFP director or TAC Chair.

The TAC seeks one person who meets the following qualifications:

  • Terminal master’s degree from a psychology-based program at least three years prior.
  • Not in pursuit of a doctoral degree.
  • Current experience working in psychology at the master’s level in public-sector settings such as community clinics, secondary schools, and colleges and universities.
  • Commitment to work with culturally, ethnically and economically diverse transition age youth in community settings.
  • Clinical experience in behavioral health treatment, prevention or training.

The selected candidate will be required to participate in two committee meetings per year, the Psychology Summer Institute, and conference calls as needed. Although honoraria are not provided, meeting travel expenses are covered. TAC members are strongly urged to attend the APA annual convention at their own expense to participate in and assist with convention programming sponsored by MFP.

Self-nominations are encouraged. Nomination materials should include:

  • Nominee’s letter of interest and qualifications (including a statement of applicable experience and a demonstration of relevance to SAMHSA’s mission and priorities as well as a commitment to serve the entire term on the TAC if appointed),
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • At least one letter supporting the candidate’s nomination. Candidates may not submit more than two letters of support.

Nominations and supporting materials should be submitted no later than October 31, 2017 at http://www.apa.org/pi/mfp/committees/stay-nominations.aspx. New TAC members will be selected in November. For more information, visit our website at http://www.apa.org/pi/mfp.
