The College of Education at the University of Maryland invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education (CHSE), which is a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Professor. The College of Education seeks an innovative leader with vision and skill in translating research to practice, and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure impact.
The Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education incorporates three outstanding former departments, all with programs having top rankings in U.S. News and World Report, 2018. These include Counseling and Personnel Services (ranked #1 for 18 years in a row), Higher Education Administration (ranked #10), and Special Education (ranked #11).
A dynamic and diverse group of 34 tenure/tenure-track faculty and 24 professional track faculty representing seven specialty areas provides innovative and exemplary graduate and undergraduate education. The Department’s Ph.D. programs in Counseling Psychology, School Psychology, Higher Education, Student Affairs, International Education Policy, and Special Education prepare scholars and researchers committed to the advancement of knowledge and practice in a variety of educational settings and contexts. CHSE also offers a wide variety of Master’s degrees to prepare practitioners to work in the fields of Student Affairs, Higher Education and International Education Policy. CHSE faculty also prepare individuals who become certified as School Counselors and Special Education Teachers.
The Department fosters a collaborative community that incorporates theory, research, and practice, and engages students, educators, and professionals in the advancement of education, psychology, and human development in the national and international arenas. CHSE houses a Counseling Clinic, the newly-established Center for Diversity and Inclusion in Higher Education, the Maryland Language and Literacy Research Center and enjoys campus-wide research ties with the Counseling Center, the Maryland Language Science Center, the Division of Student Affairs and Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The University of Maryland is located in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan area in close proximity to the U.S. Department of Education, NSF, NIH, NEA, and important educational policymaking institutions, national associations, and research organizations.
Qualifications for the position include:
● Earned doctorate in counseling psychology, school psychology, higher education, student affairs, comparative and international education, and special education, or related field
● Record of publications and scholarly activities (e.g., grant writing, national service, etc.) commensurate with appointment at rank of Professor
● Demonstrated national or international leadership and scholarship in counseling psychology, school psychology, higher education, student affairs, comparative and international education, and special education, or related discipline
● Administrative experience in a role as department chair or other comparable experience (e.g., director of a center or lab)
● Demonstrated success leading groups with diverse backgrounds and academic interests
● Experience managing budgets
● Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
