Summary:
A member of a close and collaborative team of mental health professionals who provide comprehensive mental health services to a vibrant community comprised of undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. This position provides confidential, short-term counseling/therapy to University Counseling Center (UCC) clients, consultation to students, faculty, and staff, and outreach/prevention efforts to the WFU community. The UCC is a training site for psychology and counseling interns for whom all staff members serve as supervisors, consultants, and mentors. Based on experience and interest, staff have the opportunity to provide leadership over a UCC service area and/or advocacy for a special population.
Essential Functions:
- Provides individual, couples, and group counseling/therapy to students at the University
- Conducts crisis assessment and intervention for urgent/walk-in appointments
- May coordinate at least one of the following areas and/or provide advocacy for at least one of the following populations:
o Groups Program
o Outreach
o Training (Master’s and/or Doctoral)
o Clinical Services
o Eating Disorder Services
o LGBTQ+ Students
o Alcohol and Other Drug Services
o Marginalized Populations (International Students, First Generation Students, Traditionally Underrepresented Racial/Cultural Groups)
o Men’s Mental Health
- Provides clinical supervision, consultation, and oversight to UCC graduate trainees in psychology and counseling
- Serves as a member of the committee that oversees the UCC’s psychology internship program
- Works collaboratively with other university departments as members of the Division of Campus Life to ensure delivery of integrated professional services consistent with the mission and strategic directions of Campus Life
- Provides professional consultation to all members of the University community
- Provides outreach, workshops, and training on various mental health and wellbeing topics as needed
- Provides after-hours on-call crisis counseling on a rotating basis, and occasional after-hours outreach as needed
- Keeps timely, accurate, and ethical records consistent with UCC policy
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Doctorate in psychology from an APA-accredited graduate program
- Eligible to practice as a Licensed Psychologist in the state of North Carolina (must be licensed within 12 months of start date)
- Knowledge of and experience providing a broad range of psychotherapy and counseling methods within a time-limited scope of service
- Experience with mental health provision in a college or university counseling center.
- Knowledge of and ability to use crisis intervention skills
- Knowledge, skill, and ability to work with students from a diversity of backgrounds and mar populations
- Experience providing developmentally appropriate clinical supervision to master’s and/or doctoral interns or trainees in mental health fields
- Ability to consult and collaborate both within and outside the University
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to keep good client records and use Titanium scheduler/database
- Ability to use independent judgment and to manage confidential information
- Adherence to APA professional code of ethics
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Licensed to practice as a Psychologist in the state of North Carolina
- Passion for and experience working with students from marginalized groups and diverse backgrounds; and dedication to partnering with relevant campus advocates (Safe Office, LGBTQ Center, Intercultural Center, Women’s Center, Magnolia Scholars, etc.) to improve mental health service provision
- At least two years of post-graduate experience as a mental health professional in a college/university setting
Accountabilities:
- Provides clinical consultation and supervision to master’s and/or doctoral student trainees.

UCC Mission: The University Counseling Center is committed to the mental health and wellbeing of all members of the university community. Comprised of 10 licensed mental health professionals, two doctoral psychology interns, two master’s level counseling interns, and two administrative staff, the WFU Counseling Center is positioned to provide excellent care to the university community. The staff of the WFU Safe Office – dedicated to providing prevention and response services for issues of sexual violence – also work closely with the UCC staff. The UCC is known across the university for being highly collaborative with other areas and offices. UCC enjoys particularly close partnerships with the Student Health Service, Learning Assistance Center & Disability Services, Office of the Chaplain, Dean of Students, and Residence Life & Housing.
Our clinicians are encouraged to seek opportunities to creatively develop partnerships to broaden the impact of our focus on wellbeing. This includes opportunities to serve on interdisciplinary teams including: Eating Assessment and Treatment Team, Culture of Respect Initiative, Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation Team (CARE Team), Alcohol and Other Drug Coalition, Assessment Committee, ADHD Clinic, and Crisis Management Team.
Professional staff are also supported to seek out their own professional development and clinical trainings, most or all of which are often financially supported by the university.
