Position Summary

The Psychology Department at Utah State University seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the School Psychology PhD Specialization. We are particularly interested in candidates with research programs focused on school-based mental health and/or collaborative care for youth mental health. However, we encourage applications from all qualified candidates with research programs broadly related to school psychology. Located on the main campus in Logan, Utah, this is a 1 FTE, 9-month academic year position. Review of applications will begin October 1, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date for the position is August 1, 2023. This position is not eligible for remote work. 

Position Responsibilities

  1. Conduct and disseminate research (e.g., establish a research program, publish in peer-reviewed journals).
  2. Actively pursue external funding to support your research program (e.g., via government institutions, private foundations, or regional/local agencies).
  3. Teach graduate and/or undergraduate classes within areas of expertise and specialization or department needs (including didactic/classroom instruction and clinical supervision).
  4. Mentor graduate students within the school psychology specialization (e.g., chair thesis and dissertation committees, direct a research lab that involves graduate students, support students in progressing toward graduation).
  5. Advance equity, diversity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and mentoring activities.
  6. Participate in specialization and department governance (e.g., serve on the school psychology specialization steering committee, contribute to departmental committees).
  7. Contribute service to the department, college, university, and profession.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Domestic applicants must have graduated from an APA- or CPA-accredited doctoral program in professional psychology (i.e., School, Clinical, Counseling, or Combined).
  2. Have completed requirements for the doctoral degree prior to appointment. ABD will be considered at the Instructor level if there is a plan for timely degree completion.
  3. Have a research program broadly related to school psychology.
  4. Show evidence of ability to effectively conduct and disseminate research that has potential to lead to external funding.
  5. Show evidence of ability to effectively teach and mentor students.
  6. Show commitment to advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and mentoring.
  7. Be eligible for Psychologist licensure in Utah (see https://dopl.utah.gov/psych/).
  8. Show effective oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Have graduated from a doctoral program with a specialization in School Psychology or from a Combined Psychology program that included the School specialty.
  2. Have a research program focused on school-based mental health and/or collaborative care for youth mental health.
  3. Be eligible for School Psychologist educator licensure in Utah (see https://www.schools.utah.gov/licensing).
  4. Show evidence of ability to teach graduate coursework on quantitative methods (e.g., psychometrics, structural equation modeling, longitudinal analyses).
  5. Show evidence of involvement with grant-funded research and/or practice projects (e.g., supported by government institutions, private foundations, or regional/local agencies).

Specialization Highlights

The School Psychology PhD specialization was established in the 2018–19 academic year and currently enrolls 15 full-time students. The specialization adheres to a scientist-practitioner training model with strong emphasis on training future researchers, trainers, and leaders in the field of school psychology. Since June 2020, the specialization has been a Doctoral Program Associate of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC), with 3/3 PhD students already obtaining APPIC-approved and APA-accredited predoctoral internships. The School Psychology PhD specialization was awarded initial APA accreditation in May 2021 as a Health Service Psychology training program in the practice area of school psychology. Specialization faculty have strong working relationships with local schools, providing support for a variety of clinical training and applied research opportunities. Department Highlights

The Psychology Department is located within the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services. The Department consists of over 30 faculty representing diverse areas of psychology. Faculty enjoy collaborative relationships with others in the Department as well as other departments in the College (e.g., Human Development and Family Studies) and across campus (e.g., Sociology). In addition to the School Psychology PhD specialization, the Department offers PhD specializations in other areas of psychology: Combined Clinical/Counseling, Behavior Analysis, and Brain and Cognition. The Department also offers an undergraduate major (BS) in Psychology, a distance-learning masters degree (MEd) in Professional School Counseling, and contributes to a multi-department PhD in Neuroscience.
