Division 16 School Psychology is seeking applicants for the Ethics Subcommittee under the Vice President for Social and Ethical Responsibility and Ethnic Minority Affairs of Division 16.

Below is a general description.

I. Purpose and Goals

The Ethics Committee will focus on ethical issues in all aspects of psychology which affect the role and functioning of school psychologists. The goals of the Committee include:

A. To utilize the newsletter, The School Psychologist, to disseminate information about professional ethics.
B. To provide a mechanism for members of the Division to deal with conflict over ethical issues.
C. To review ethical issues concerning training and practice procedures (e.g., computer scoring of psychological tests, sharing assessment data with parents/agencies, etc.) and disseminate these to the broader membership of Division 16.
D. To identify ethical issues of general concern and develop strategies to increase the awareness of members to these issues.
E. To maintain appropriate communications with APA’s Ethics Committee as well as other committees and task forces for the purpose of being informed of areas in which ethical issues are raised.

II. Structure

The Committee has a chairperson and an unspecified number of members. The Chairperson is appointed by the Vice President for Social and Ethical Responsibility and Ethnic Minority Affairs for a three-year term. The committee should include 5 additional individuals who will serve for a three-year term. An individual may serve no more than two consecutive terms. When a committee member resigns or rotates off of the committee, the chairperson, in collaboration with the VP-SEREMA, will identify a new committee member.

III. Interrelationships (within APA and outside APA)

The Committee shares common concerns and maintains liaison with the Ethics Committee within the APA and the Ethical and Professional Standards Committee of the National Association of School Psychologists.
