This webinar is a continuing education program co-sponsored by Division 16 of the American Psychological Association and the Temple University Department of Psychological Studies in Education. The Temple University Department of Psychological Studies in Education is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Temple University Department of Psychological Studies in Education maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

The early career is an exciting and potentially difficult time for health service psychologists, including school psychologists. Unique challenges abound including establishing a professional identity, practicing independently for the first time in a broad array of professional roles, managing feelings of disillusionment with professional training, and coping with elevated levels of stress, and even burnout. Supervision and mentoring can provide critical supports in the early career. The purpose of this webinar is to explore the role of supervision in the early career in two ways. First, the role of supervision in supporting early career psychologists (ECP) will be described. Second, the process of becoming a supervisor will be considered, as many ECP will go on to supervise despite never having received training to do so. The concept of deliberate practice will be presented as a common thread for ECP professional development, including developing the competency required to supervise others. The content of this webinar is intended to be relevant for graduate students and practitioners who currently provide, or are interested in providing, supervision. The focus will be on supervisors in school psychology, but the content may also be relevant and useful for other early career psychologists.
